The Psalm writer wrote: Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Your law. As we come before a Holy God and hear his word, may we have eyes open to the wonderful and fearful things from his law. May it move us to repent and seek forgiveness, fear disobedience, and live in light of the grace we have received. This is the word of God. It is eternally true and applicable for all of life.
Proverbs 18:21-24 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. He who finds a wife finds a good thing And obtains favor from the Lord. The poor man utters supplications, But the rich man answers roughly. A man of too many friends comes to ruin,But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Submissive, chaste, respectful, gentle. Adornment not merely external, but having a heart that reveals a gentle and quiet spirit. Dignified. Not a malicious gossip. Temperate. Faithful. All of these are the traits of a godly wife. The Proverb says: “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.” Created after Adam on day 6, God saw His creation, part of which was Adam’s wife Eve, and saw that it was good. It was good for man to have a helper. It was good for man to have a companion and not be alone. It was good for man to have authority over the woman. It was good for man to love his wife, and for her to respect her husband. It was an act of God’s grace to order His creation this way, giving us a beautiful picture of Christ’s relationship to the church.
When we find a wife, it is an act of God’s grace in our lives. Trust me, men, you've married up. You don't deserve the wife you've been blessed with. How have you responded to this gift? As Christ laid down His life for His bride the Church, men must lay down their lives for their wives. Men, you get to die first. How have you fared in carrying out this duty? Wives, as the Church submits to the Lordship of Christ, women submit to their husbands. Are you submissive to your husbands? Husbands, your wives are a blessing, an act of God’s unmerited favor toward you: repent where you have been slack in your duties. Wives, your role is special, honorable, and important. The world's view of the Church is shaped in large part by your relationship to your husband. Repent, and cry out to God for mercy. Husbands, ask for grace to love your wives as the weaker vessel; wives, for the strength to resist the temptation of resenting your position as a wife, and the temptation to despise your womanhood and femininity. Let us kneel and confess to our Heavenly Father how we have sinned against him in this area of life.
Heavenly Father, often times we hate the way You created us. As men, we abuse our authority, neglect our duties as husbands, seek to be served rather than laying down our lives; for women, the temptation is to rule their husbands, and to hate their womanhood and femininity. Father please forgive us where we have broken Your commands as husbands and wives. Please forgive us for not trusting that You know what’s best for us. Father, you created male and female, giving the woman to man as a helper, and said it was good. It was an act of favor towards man. Help us to believe this. Help us to trust You and reject the pressure of the world, the lies of the Devil, and the temptations of our own flesh. Father, please be merciful towards us and forgive us where we have brought reproach upon Your Name and marred the image of Your Bride, by living in a way contrary to Your design for men and women. It’s in the powerful Name of Your Son Jesus that we pray, Amen.
Listen now to the comforting assurance of the grace of God, promised in the gospel to all that believe:
Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. John 15:13-16
