The Psalm writer wrote: Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Your law. As we come before a Holy God and hear his word, may we have eyes open to the wonderful and fearful things from his law. May it move us to repent and seek forgiveness, fear disobedience, and live in light of the grace we have received. This is the word of God. It is eternally true and applicable for all of life.
Proverbs 29: 11-20 A fool always loses his temper, But a wise man holds it back. If a ruler pays attention to falsehood, All his ministers become wicked. The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The Lord gives light to the eyes of both. If a king judges the poor with truth, His throne will be established forever. The rod and reproof give wisdom, But a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother. When the wicked increase, transgression increases; But the righteous will see their fall. Correct your son, and he will give you comfort; He will also delight your soul. Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, But happy is he who keeps the law. A slave will not be instructed by words alone; For though he understands, there will be no response. Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
In the book of Daniel we have seen how the godless, pagan King Nebuchadnezzar had accumulated for himself what Pastor Joseph called sham counselors. These ministers built their positions upon a foundation of lies and deception, as we discovered while reading about their inability to interpret Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. The bible teaches that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, and fools despise wisdom and instruction. With no fear of God before his eyes, it should not come as a surprise that the king was surrounded by wicked advisors. If a ruler pays attention to falsehood, All his ministers become wicked.
This is true in many areas of life is it not? An atheist hates God, so he will build his worldview upon the deception of Darwin, Hawkins, and Bertrand Russell. Many so called Christians fall into this trap. Loving to have their itching ears tickled with falsehoods more palatable to them than the truth of God’s Word, they wind up with counselors like TD Jakes, Joyce Meyer, and Joel Osteen. This reality was even present in the garden of Eden. Adam’s helper became a minister of deceit because he listened to her rather than the voice of God when it came to the fruit. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 tells us
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.”
How might you have stumbled into this error today? Is there some area of your life where you have set aside God’s wisdom and counsel, in favor of lies? Is there some sin in your life that is precious to you, which has led you to surround yourself with ministers all too willing to keep you shackled in chains of sin and deception. The proverbs teach us that we are to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path”. Can this be said of you this morning? Are you trusting in the Lord, or are you being led along by lies and deception like a swine with a ring in its snout? Do you acknowledge Him in all your ways, being directed by the Holy Spirit onto the path of life, or has your appetite for sin set you on a course of destruction in pursuit of the next big lie to satisfy your cravings?
If you are able, let us kneel at this time and confess to the LORD how we often listen to falsehood and store up ungodly counsel for ourselves.
Father, we come before You this morning knowing that in our arrogance we often store up counselors for ourselves who teach things contrary to Your Word, and we are led astray. We do this seeking to satisfy the lust of our flesh, lust of our eyes, and our pride. Father, we know we cannot rightfully blame anyone but ourselves in this matter, as it is the desires of our own hearts which drive this hunger for falsehood. Please forgive us for thinking that the wisdom of the world is superior to Your infinite wisdom. Please help us to remember that hidden in Your Son Jesus are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Father, please fill us with Your Spirit, and lead us into all truth. It’s in Jesus Name we pray, Amen.
Listen now to the comforting assurance of the grace of God, promised in the gospel to all that believe:
Colossians 1:18- 23 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven
To all those who thus repent and seek Jesus Christ for their salvation, your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lift up your hearts!
