The Psalm writer wrote: Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Your law. As we come before a Holy God and hear his word, may we have eyes open to the wonderful and fearful things from his law. May it move us to repent and seek forgiveness, fear disobedience, and live in light of the grace we have received. This is the word of God. It is eternally true and applicable for all of life.
Proverbs 19:11-20 A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, And it is his glory to overlook a transgression. The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion, But his favor is like dew on the grass. A foolish son is destruction to his father, And the contentions of a wife are a constant dripping. House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the Lord. Laziness casts into a deep sleep, And an idle man will suffer hunger. He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of conduct will die. One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, And He will repay him for his good deed. Discipline your son while there is hope, And do not desire his death. A man of great anger will bear the penalty, For if you rescue him, you will only have to do it again. Listen to counsel and accept discipline, That you may be wise the rest of your days. Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the Lord will stand.
One does not need look far to recognize that we live in a society that is throwing off restraint and attempting to tear down authority all across this land. In an attempt to fill a void in their lives, driven by the lust of the flesh, young men and women, neglected, abused, and cast aside by their fathers, have turned to homosexuality, abortion, drugs, and self worship, to find some meaning and purpose in life. The swiftness with how things seem to have turned, often leaves us as Christians struggling with doubts, fears of the future, and wondering, “ What can I do to remain faithful among this wicked and perverse generation?”.
Our response is to wage war against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places, and the battleground may be closer to home than you might think: Discipline your son while there is hope, and do not desire his death. The application of godly, loving discipline and correction to the life of your son is the most effective thing that a father can do to advance the Kingdom of God in these end times. We know that our heavenly Father disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom He receives. Fathers, this is our example. To not discipline our sons is to treat them as illegitimate children. Bastard children become bitter, angry, prideful, rebellious children who reject God, throw off their manhood and womanhood, murder their children, and abuse themselves in all manner of wicked ways.
There are a variety of reasons why we often fail in this most important task: “I’m too tired, I’m busy, I just want peace, I don’t want to see them upset, mom will take care of it, I am not getting through to them, I will get to it later, I would rather let them make their own decisions”, and on and on. Look around you fathers. The fruit of fatherlessness isn’t just evident in the pride parades and the swelling prison population: it’s being felt within the Church. Children are leaving the faith their parents claim to hold to. The Southern Baptist Convention is cowering in fear as the feminists seek to usurp the bible’s clear teaching on authority. Homosexuality has been all but rubber stamp approved by most in Christendom. Christians get abortions at a similar rate as the heathens. Why? Fathers have failed to discipline their sons. Fathers have failed to raise their children in the fear and instruction of the Lord. Here at Sovereign King Church, we hold our heads high as we promote biblical manhood and womanhood, as we trumpet the clear biblical teaching than men and women need to live the way God created them. That husbands must love their wives and discipline their children, and wives must submit to their husbands and manage their home well. Let us not be prideful in this area, knowing that he who thinks he stands must take heed lest he falls. Fathers, discipline your son while there is hope and do not desire his death. It is loving to do so. Let us confess how we have sinned and fallen short of this responsibility our Father has given us. Please kneel if able.
Most gracious Heavenly Father, we throw ourselves upon Your mercy this morning, as men and women of dust who know that we have oftentimes sinned against You in our failure to discipline our children. We cast off our responsibilities and hand them to another; we desire peace above conflict, so we overlook sin that should be corrected; we desire to see our children happy above all else, even above holiness, without which no man will see God; Lord, we are often too harsh, provoking our children to anger. Father, please be merciful to us sinners. Please grant us repentant hearts, that we might turn back to our children and love them. Father, help us to fear You rather than man, and discipline our sons while there is still hope. It’s in Jesus name that we pray, Amen.
Listen now to the comforting assurance of the grace of God, promised in the gospel to all that believe:
One will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. | Romans 5:7-9
To all those who thus repent and seek Jesus Christ for their salvation, your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." Lift up your hearts!
