Our Story

Sovereign King Church is a Reformed, evangelical, and Protestant church in Jeffersonville, Indiana. We are a church for real people: real sinners who have been rescued by the grace of God and are now learning to live under the gracious rule of Jesus Christ.

We are unapologetic in our proclamation of God’s Word, both within the church and throughout our community. We believe the gospel does not merely comfort individuals. It transforms lives, strengthens families, builds the Church, confronts sin, and brings every part of life under the lordship of Jesus Christ.

At Sovereign King Church, we are committed to building everything on the Word of God because Jesus Christ is King.

We confess: Jesus is Lord!
We proclaim: His Word to all!
We construct: Our lives upon His truth!

The Beginning

The story of Sovereign King Church began with a shared burden for Southern Indiana.

When Mark and Melissa Cox moved to the area, they prayed that God would use their home for His glory. Mark longed to see a confessionally Reformed and evangelistic church established in the community. Around the same time, Joseph Spurgeon had recently graduated from seminary and was seeking the Lord’s direction for ministry and for his family’s next steps.

In 2015, Mark met Joseph Spurgeon and Aaron Sabie while ministering outside the abortion mill in Louisville, Kentucky. As they labored side by side, preaching the gospel and pleading for the lives of the unborn, the Lord knit their hearts together around a shared vision: a Reformed church that would boldly proclaim the whole counsel of God and take the gospel into the public square.

By late 2016, a small Bible study began in the Cox family’s home under Joseph’s teaching and leadership. From that Bible study, Sovereign King Church was born. In time, the church became a church plant of Evangel Presbytery, with Joseph Spurgeon serving as the founding pastor.

Continued Growth & God’s Blessings

The Lord has multiplied the ministry of Sovereign King Church in ways we never imagined. By His grace, men are being strengthened to lead their homes in a Christlike manner, women are embracing their high calling as wives and mothers, children are being raised in the discipline and instruction of the Lord, sinners are being called to repentance, and lives are being transformed by the gospel.

  • In 2024, Sovereign King Church launched Sovereign King Academy, a hybrid Christian school equipping the next generation with a Christ-centered education.

  • In 2025, we began Sunday School to further equip our congregation with a deeper knowledge of God’s Word.

  • In 2025, the Lord blessed us with the ordination of Zack Jackson as an elder, strengthening the leadership of the church.

  • In 2026, Sovereign King Church installed Greg Anglen as associate pastor. Pastor Greg also serves as the headmaster of Sovereign King Academy.

Through every season, the Lord has been faithful. We are thankful for what He has done, and we are eager to continue confessing Christ as King, proclaiming His gospel reign, and constructing according to His command.

The Mission Continues

Though Sovereign King Church is no longer a church plant, the work of planting, watering, and harvesting is far from over. The Lord has called us to sow the Word of God throughout Southern Indiana, to make disciples, to build faithful homes, and to proclaim the reign of Jesus Christ in every part of life.

Our mission remains clear: we confess Christ as King, proclaim Christ’s gospel reign, and construct according to Christ’s command.

By God’s grace, we will continue this work until every knee bows and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord.

To God be the glory.
